EASTERN AFFAIRS.
THE RECENT CONFLIOr AT SHANGHAI. FRENOIToLAIMS. [UNITED FBEBS ABSOOIATION.] Shanghai, December 6. In July last there was a serious* conflict at Shanghai between a body of French marines and members of the Niagpo Guild, a Society formed to look after the interests of many thousands of Chinese who have been attacked from the neighbouring town of Nigpo. The conflict was the outcome of the Chinese Government refusing to deliver up certain lands, including the Ningponese Joss House and cemetary which the French claim belong to their settlement at Shanghai. France offered monetary compensation and a new site for a Joss House and cemetery, but was re* fused. France now demands valuable territory m the Yangtse Eiang Valley, as compensation for the nonrecognition of her claims to land m Shanghai. Liou Kouoy;, the Viceroy of the Manking province, refused to accede to French demand?, and is preparing to resist.
