THE MIRAMS LIBEL CASE.

[UNITED PRESB ASSOCIATION.] Melboubne, May 8. Mt Miraras obtained a verdict of £5 m the libel suit against the Argus question, costs were not decided. Later. In the libel case, Miraras v. Argus, the juiy found for the defendant (newspaper) ou the main issue, and for the plaintiff on a minor point. The libel (for which £10,000 was claimed)-/was contained m a loaderette dealing with the candidature of Mr George Godfrey for the Legislative Council, and declaring that ho was an unsuitable man because, as counsel put if, "he preferred the pockets of himself and friends to the punishment of these reckless men" — viz., the Premier Permanen*; Society men. The article declared :— " The short history of that unfortunate institution is that Mr J. L. Dow, Mr J. Kimmo, and oiher third - rate politicians, with a political secretary, played ducks and drakes with every thing. After these men had got rid of the depositors' money, with the aid of Mr Kun-em-up, they calmly proceeded to pawn every asset and every deed so as to obtain more money for illegitimate transactions, with the result that when the inevitable liquidator appeared upon the scene all the money ihat could be raised has gone to take assets and deeds out of pawn. Until these mortgages and advances are paid off no depositor can get a penny." Mr Mirams has had to listen m court to a scathing recital of all the enormi-

ties and scandals of his nianr.gerueut by Mr Purves, who, m a speech lasting over two days, put the knife m very deoply. Tho complete history of all the Premier Permanent transactions was gono into all over agaiu for the defence, which vriil cost the Argus, probably, a couplo of thousands. Amongst the most damaging things brought out againet Miram3 is his concealing from the directors such letters as tho following from tho manager of the City of Melbourne Bank :— " I find another cheque for £2000 came iv on the late exchange, making your account £39,000. I have now to inform you that I decline to ha responsible fcr keeping your account, and I shall instruct that after seven days from this date no payments oxcept to pay us off will be admitted." Mr Mirams simply di'l not consider this of sufficient importance to bring before the board. Oboup is a terror to young mothers. To post them concerning the first symptoms, and treatment, is the object of this item. The first indication of croup is hctrseaesß. In a child who is subject to croup ii may be taken as a cure sign of the approach of an attack. Following this hoarseness is a peculiar, rough cough. If Chamberlain's Cough remedy is given as Eoon as the child becomes hoaree, or even after tho rough cough has eppeared, it will prevent the attack. It has never been known to fail. — For sale by F. Shaw, Medical Hall. j
