EDUCATIONAL CONFERENCE.

At the Education Conference today, Mr Mills (Marlborough) moved a resolution, the effect being to ask the Minister of Education to alter the Act so as to do away with the friction between Boards and Committees re appointment of teachers A long discussion ensued. The majority of members, while agreeing that the present mode of proceeding was unsatisfactory, declined to vote for the motion, as they considered it would place too much power m the hands of Committees. The motion was lost. Mr McGregor (Otago) moved a resolution to the effect that Boards should be elected by the electors of tbe colony, and for the Minister to be asked to amend the act m that direction. The motion was lost, on the casting vote of the Chairman. A motion by Dr Newman (Wellington), m favor of a national system of decimal notation, was agreed to. On the motion of Mr Udy (Auckland) it was resolved to ask the Minister to amend the Act, to enable Boards to establish central schools for children after passing the fifth standard, with a view to give children more practical instruction than was afforded by the present schools. The usual compliments to the chair terminated the labors of the Conference.
