FARMERS' CONFERENCE. NEW ZEALAND BANK "RETURNS. [ORITBD PBEBB ASSOCIATION.] Sydney, August 9. The Farmers' Conference resolved that if Parliament decide to impose direct taxation it should take the form of an Income Tax applied to all classes without exemption. Resolutions were carried m favor of a State Bank and Government assistance to farmers m the export of produce ; also that local government ba more systematic m the destruction of rabbits. The Government has let a contract for the manufacture lo ally of £26,000 worth of iron pipes. This will give employment to 300 men. | The Herald, commenting on New i Zealand ba-uk returns, says it is | noteworthy that while m the other colonies there has been a general decrease m advances, m New Zealand the increase is apparent. This, it says, is all the more noto worthy from the fact that Government has become a competitor m this class of business. With larger averages of coin and bullion, the position of the banks is stronger than it was.
