SNOW STORMS.

♦ (united press association.] Hawera, July 80. There was a heavy fall of snow all over Southern Taranaki last night, varying in depth from 8 or 9 inches at Stratford to two on the Waimafce Plains, and one in Hawera. Dunedin, July 80. There has been the heaviest snowfall for years. Train traffic was suspended till 9 a.m. It is still snowing. Four inches had fallen up to mid-day. Christohurch, July 30. The weather is bitterly cold, with strong S.W. winds, and snowstorms at intervals. Timabu, July 29. There was six inches of Bnow at Fairlio yesterday. Mr Young, and an assistant, got through Fairlio to Pukaki last week, and back to Fairlie on Saturday night. He reports 2 feet of snow between Burke's Pass and Tekapo, 2£ between Tekapo aud Balmoral, 3 to 3£ feet on the Wolds Plains, 2 feet at Simon's Pass, and 1^ at Pukaki. As far as the eye could see there was very little bare ground visible. It is extremely cold. Dogs are frozen, and small birds are dropping off the trees at the homesteads. The two men got through with tfreat difficulty, their homes having icicles 5 or 6 inches loag from tlieir nostrils.
