He was elected a fellow of the Royal Sooiety {m 1852, and m 1855 was Professor of Natural Bistory at the Royal School of Mine?, and also Fullerian Professor of Physiology at l she Royal Institution. He was subsequently President of the British Association, Hector of the Aberdeen University, Rede lecturer at Cambridge, and President of the Royal Society. In 1885 he resigned his official cfutie's and Bettled down to a life of quiet and comparative retirement at Eastbourne.
