PECULIAR LAWYERS.
* An Auckland paragraphist says : — A casual visitor has noticed the fact that Auckland is the only place m the known world where lawyers are religious men. It is not, of course, assumed that all the lawyers are so, and no doubt there are men of sin among them. Still, that there are any, and not merely any, but many bo, constitutes a social phenomenon which is stated to be unprecedented m the annals of humanity. That lawyers should be exceptionally regarded as sons of Belial, is one of those singular ideas that seem, from the universality with which they pervade mankind, to be innate. It is no doubt incorrect, and it is one of those unfair charges which, once made, seem to stick, on the principle that if you give a dog a bad name you may as well hang him. But even when inspired by the purest of patriotic motives they enrolled themselves at home for the defence of the country, the regiment was at once dubbed " The Devil's Own." This is what makes it such a notable fact that the lawyers of Auckland are religious, and m point of fact the case is so exceptional m the history of the world that when it; is known, as it will now be from this publication, strangers that come from afar, will never go away or think that they have done justice to Auckland or to themselves as globetrotters, till they have been shown Mount Eden and Mrs Yates and a religious lawyer. One thing is very awe that a lawyer that is religious nuy be depended upon as being geniinely so. The wrench that he mus. have made m tearing himself from the clutches of the enemy must have teen so severe as to show the highest standard of virility m his Christitnity, and to the man that Us mad? up a lawyer's bill and still remained a true Christian, you may en rust your soul's everlasting salvation.
