In the Supreme Court a case of slander, wherein Thomas Lloyd claimed £500 damage from Corneliti3 Casey, the latter having stated that plaintiff had burnt down his house which was insured, was concluded this moming, when jury gave a verdiot for the plaintiff, damages £250. Mr. Samuel, who appeared for the defendant applied to the Court to stay proceedings on account of excessive damages. The Judge agreed to hear the application to stay proceedings this afternoon. Wanganui, October 14. At the Supreme Court this morning the prisoners Noble and Laing charged with stealing £230 from the person were sentenced, the former to two years' imprisonment with hard labor, and the latter to one year with hard labor. Another prisoner named Kenny was sentenced to IS months with hard labor for arson.
