POLITICAL JOTTINGS.
[UNITED PfIESS ASSOCIATION,] Wellington, June 9. The country authorities of the West Coast of the South Island and goldfields m Otago find themselves m straits for revenue, since the gold duty was abolished. A deputation waits on Ministers to-morrow to lay the position before them, and ask that some means should be provided to enable them to carry on necessary works. The Minister for Public Works has effected some alterations and amalgamations m the Defence Department at Auckland, which will-save about £300 per annum. Ho has given orders for the completion of the most urgent works on tho forts, which will occupy three or four months. The Conciliation Bill is being printed, and distributed as fast as copies come to hand. The provisions have met the approval of those bodies to which, so far, it has been submitted. It is stated that Mr Wrigley has abandoned his intention of claiming his forfeited seat m the Legislative Council,
