DISPUTED OWNERSHIP OF A EIVEE. THE PACIFIC CABLE. (united prbss association.) Keceived July 3, 12.40 p.m. Sydney, July 3. The question of the ownership of the Murray Eiver is again m dispute between Victoria and New South Wales. The former Colony claims jurisdiction over half, and the latter Colony claims jusisdiction over the whole of the river. The dispute is again raised by the action of New South Wales m proclaiming the river closed for net fishing for twelve months. Memjoukne, July 3. During the year ending May 31, 270 companies,- with a nominal capital of £52,000,000, were registered m the colony. Lord Knutsford, replying to the request made by the Postal Conference held m January last m Sydney, that the Admiralty should survey the route for the Pacific cable, says that H.M.S. Egeria, which is now on a general surveying tour, would furnish information concerning deep sea soundings for the general line of the cable, but that to survey the route to any purpose would entail a long and searching examination. Lord Knutsford adds that no alteration can now be made m the Egeria's orders. The question of hastening the work of survey must remain open until Lord Knutsford is satisfied, there is a prospect of the necessary funds being forthcoming, and it is shown that the expedition is important to Imperial interests. The annual cost of the Egeria is L1'2,000, and if another vessel is provided to complete the survey, the expense will be increased to about L 30,000 irrespective of the value of the ship and expenditure on outfit.
