ALARMING EARTHQUAKE AT TARAWERA.

♦ THE STATE OP THE COUNTRY. . (united press association.) Auckland, July 13. A severe earthquake was experienced at Tarawera last night. The Natives and Europeans made a stampede for Pukeroa Hill. An examination made by the Professors of the island Mahoia m the centre of Lake Rotorna shows that the water has risen five inches on the south side and fallen five inohea on the north. This shows that the eruption has caused the country to tilt, and it is believed that Ohinemutu stands three feet lower than before the eruption, Papers were read before the Auckland Institute hy Percy Smith, Assistant-Sur-vey or-General, and J. A. Pond, entitled "Observations on the Tarawera Eruption." They challenge Dr Hector's theory of local eruptions, and assert the fertility of the volcanic mud deposit. They express belief ad to the tributary waters filling up Like Rotomnhana and covering; the present outlet. They thiuk there will be a further outbreak of hydro-thermal action and that the probable outcome will be the gradual decrease of the hot springs m the surrounding districts, ami their concentration at Tarawera.

Incisions made m two places, Although Lister's dressing was applied, the secretion became, two days later, very copious, and had adopted a foetid, decomposed character. The temperature rose enormously. In consequence the dressing was removed, and on its place were made during the day lime repeated irrigations with Eucalypti Extract. The offensive foetid discharge disappeared soon, fever abated within a few days, and the patient recovered after the lapse of several weeks.
