LOWER WAIRAU RIVERS BOARD.
A special meeting of the Board was held at Mr T. O’Sullivan’s Office, on Monday evening. Present : Messrs Parker (in the chair). Redwood, Davies, Horne, and Eyles. The minutes of the previous meeting were read and confirmed. Mr O’Sullivan explained what had taken place in reference to making up the Rate Roll for -the district, the result of which was that he had asked the Judge of the Assessment Court for instructions in the matters, and had been told that it was clear by the Act that he could make the Roll of the Omaka Road Board District, which was made up, the basis of the Roll for this Rivers Board District and there was therefore no further difficulty in the matter. He himself had-never entertained any doubt on the point, but deemed it right on behalf of the Board to get instructions from the Assessment Court. Mr O’Sullivan reported the receipt from the Government of a voucher for £370 as the half yearly subsidy. The Chairman said the meeting had been called to take into consideration Dr Renwick’s letter in leference to the overflow at Gibson’s Creek, in which the Dr suggested that protective works entailing a cost of £SO of which he would contribute £2O should be undertaken by this Board. He and other members of the Board has inspected the locality, and had arrived at the conclusion that there was no necessity for the Board to undertake the work. The locality was outside their district. They also paid a visit on the same occasion to the works at the Breach, and were of opinion that they were not getting an equivalent for the 10s a day they were paying to Mr Bary for simply inspecting this work, and he would now suggest that on Mr Bary (who was quite willing) should be put to some other, work, such as cutting manuka and
clearing off stonea from the the channel. Aa to Dodson's bank it required fencing, in as the horses were eating away the young trees growing on it and injuring the bank which required protection. The Chairman moved that the Secretary be instructed to write to Dr lienwick, informing him that the Board declined to go into any River Works outside of their district. Mr Redwood seconded the motion which was carried. Mr Redwood moved that Mr Bary I a instructed to fill up his spare time in cutting manuka for wattling purposes and clearing off stones, &c., from the channel to the-north of the site of the pile driving leading to the Wairau. Mr Davies seconded the motion which was carfied. /The Board then adjourned.
