PIOTON ROUSED AT LAST!

SIX, — Picton has aroused itself ; the disciple of Isaac Walton has called a public meeting over a Mayor's ncsfc — the Blenheim Extension. I admire consistency, and like to see a party die game. lam an admirer of the Grey Goverument and have no wish to se^ them defeated, but I fear there is great danger m the dying agonies of that great party m Picton, who so ardently worship the Upper Ten. Could not something be done to allay the great agitation there — or anything thought of that might induce his Worship the Mayor to make another excuroion down the bay. I really fear that if Picton is not kept quiet the stability of our constitution is endangered. Stilt many allowances must be made. Few of us have all our . wtts about us after awaking. Yet' thiuk 'of the Mayor of that important town stating at this time of day "that the Government should be informed of the importance of the place and of the will of the people 1 1" Who does not know the importance of Picton?

Such a slander on the knowledge of Government and the eyesight of Sir Geo. Grey is fraught with great danger to New Zealand. Try and do something Mr Editor to allay the excitement. Tell them that Picton is certain to be the terminus of the railway some day— that an earthquake will close up Port Underwood, and that Picton has only to wait to be- the seat of Government with your old friend John Godfrey, Premier. I must say though, that he has shown good sense at last. There is an Editor m Picton. I think there is. Could not some one recommend him for a J. P. -ship ? Why has it not been done ? This Government must be to blame m waking the green-eyed monster m the Picton Presa as well as indignation m the large public meeting. A horrible doubt occurs to me— could iv after all, be possible that the Government do not know there is an Editor m Picton — do they credit some base insinuation of the Mablbobough Expbesß that the Picton Press is edited m Blenheim, and is is this the reason why a J. P. -ship was not [ granted? If this is true you have much to ansWer for. It is too bad if' they must come I here for literature as well as law. So put this matter straight at once, or I fear dire resul f s from the wrath of Picton. No Ministry can stand it ! Think of that large and injluenial meeting upholding (I suppose his Worship is a Churchwarden and was thinking, of Aaron and Hur) the hands of the two Opposition members of the district. Such a combination of power would be overwhelming. As the weather is fine now, could you not take a trip to Picton — do something — promise that you will not mention Port Underwood for the next seven years— that you will try to get a J. P. -ship for the Editor, and declare to all creation that Picton beer cannot be surpassed. Sir G. Grey did not know what he was about when he put that l£d on beer.— l am, &c. Tomatou.
