WEDNESDAY, DEC. 20, 1876.

The manner m which Mr. Seymour was received by his constituents on Saturday evening ought to convince him, if lie require convincing, that he has performed his duty both as Superintendent of the Province and member of the General Assembly to the entire satisfaction of the electors. In his speech Mr. Seymour made no attempt to soar into the high regions of oratoiy, bnt merely endeavored, and that successfully, to give the public a clear idea of what had been done during the late session, and of his opinions regarding the County System of Government. As his views on this subject are given very lucidly m another column, it is not necessary that we should make any comments on them here. Suffice it to say that he was thoroughly successful m his attempt to show exactly how the new system would affect this part of the colony. With regard to Mr. Seymour we may say, without any wish to praise Mm beyond his desert , that the untiring zeal with which he has performed his legislative duties, the constant desire he has evinced to do all m his power for the benefit of his constituents, and the almost unvarying success with which he has urged their wants at head-quarters, have tended to gain him the confidence and respect of the people. It may be truthfully said of him that he has always acted without the slightest ostentation or selfishness, and it may be owing to that very fact that lie possesses so much influence m the General Assembly as he does. Amongst other things he, during the late Session, got the Government to promise faithfully that our Railway should be extended to the Town, and to vote the necessary amount for the third time; obtained a grant of money for the construction of the Rai Valley Tramway ; and procured a sufficient sum to cany on the education of our children till the next meeting of the Assembly. The importance of having the Railway Terminus m Town, and of providing Education for the youth of the Province, need not be dilated upon. The construction of the Rai Valley Traway is also a matter of considerable importance, inasmuch as it will ultimately be the means of opening up a new, shorter, and better road to Nelson than .the one at present xised The Tramway will also throw open a large quantity of agricultural land, and immense tracts covered with valuable timber. Therefore the construction of the tramway is a matter of some moment to the public. Mr C. Redwood m

moving a vote of confidence m Mr Seymour at the meeting expressed a hope that that gentleman would occupy the position of Chair-man-of the County Council, and we have no hesitation m saying that the same feeling is shared by a large majority of the public, for judging by past experience of his administrative abilities there can be no doubt that he would fill it ably and honorably.
