Christchtjrch, June 1. The extension of the Southern Railway, from Ashbufton to Rangitoto, a distance of 20 miles, was opened, for traffic yesterday. This makes a total of 70 miles how opened from Christchurch southward.
The New Zealand Shipping Company have received advices to-day from London t\\ab contracts have been made for the immediate building of five new iron ships of the highest class at Lloyds, and of extra strength; the ships will each be 1000 tons registered, and are to be named as follows : — The Hurunui, Waipawa, Wairoa, Orari, and Otak. They will all arrive m the Colony m time for the next wool season.
The City Council have decided upon the general use of earth closets m the city.
Dunedin, June 2. Mr Donald Reid's want of confidence motion m Basting's Executive was carried at two this morning by five of a majority.
