FAIR PLAY FOR EVER !
Sir, —There was a very sensible letter in your journal last week under the head of “ Fair play for ever,” which will go home to many a one besides the present writer, and show that the object of Mr Eyes’ persecutors is nothing but personal and political spite, rising entirely from the course he took in the “miserable past.” Disagreeing as I did and do, in regard to some of these movements, and especially the removal of the seat of Government, I see no reason now for jumping on him, removed as he is from the arena of politics. I have looked over the list of the committee and that of the deputation, and with one or two solitary exceptions they are all men who are, oi at least have been his moat inveterate foes for years. What can these men care about any improvement in his moral character ; or how can they* sympathise with his family when they have reduced him to beggary?—l am, &c., One Interested in Marlborouoh Dec. 20th.
