THE WAIRAU AGRICULTURAL SOCIETY.

A general meeting of the members ot this Society was held at James’ Assembly Rooms, on Tuesday evening last, Mr Paul in the chair. '***'

As the attendance was only meagre, the meeting resolved itself into a kind of committee for considering the rules and report, with a view to presenting them at an adjourned meeting to be held at the same place on Saturday next, the 10th instant, at three o’clock in the afternoon, when we trust there will be a numerous attendance of the members, so as to insure the combination of all possible good in the working and management of the Society, and the selection of those gentlemen as officers and committeemen who are best qualified for the office, and show by their attendance that they really feel an interest in promoting the prosperity and welfare of the Society and its objects, which everyone will admit are the most important in this country. The business to be done at the meeting in question is of considerable moment, for on the wise formation of the laws and the good government of a Society like this very much will depend. Peeling this, we procured the drafted copy of rules, and publish them below, so as to afford the numerous members an opportunity of considering them before the meeting, when, if no alteration or improvement is suggested, they will be passed into law, and become binding on the members. They are a follows : 1. That this Society be for the promotion of Agricultural and Pastoral interests, and be called the Wairau Agricultural and Pastoral Society. 2. The Society shall consist of President, Treasurer, Secretary, and Members, 3. That every person contributing 10/ annually shall be a member of the Society. 4. An Annual General Meeting of the Society shall be held about the 29th of May.

5. The affairs of the Society shall be managed by aPi'esident, Secretary, Treasurer, and a Committee of not less than twelve, to be elected annually at the general meeting for the year. In the event of any vacancy occurring in any office between the Annual Meetings, the same shall be filled up by the Committee. 6. The Secretary shall keep a regular set of books to be furnished from the funds of the Society, containing an account of the receipts, disbursements, and sums due to the Society by Members and others ; also, a record of the votes and proceedings of the Committee, and general meetings, and he shall preserve all communications made to the Society, which shall be deemed worthy of being recorded, also file all newspaper reports of annual exhibitions. 7. There shall be four quarterly meetings as follows :—Second Wednesday of March, June, September, and December; and any special meeting can be held when deemed necessary by the Secretary. 8. All monies received on account of the Society shall be paid to the Treasurer, and shall be deposited by him in the name of the Society, in the Bank of New Zealand, Blenheim. No money shall be paid on account of the Society except by cheque, signed by the Treasurer and Secretary. 9. At every meeting of the Committee, five members shall form a quorum and all questions shall be decided by the majority of votes, or show of hands, the Chairman having an original and a casting vote. 10. No member shall be entitled to vote at any annual or other meeting whose subscription shall be in arrears.

11. Annual subscriptions shall be due and payable on the First Saturdav in April, each year. 12. The accounts of the Society shall be audited and submitted at the Annual General Meeting, and afterwards published. 13. The first election of officers under these rules shall take place, and date from the 29th of May, 1871.

Among other things to be dealt with at the meeting are the accounts for the past year, and although the balance-sheet has not been formally presented, we may venture to congratulate the Society on having paid all demands so far, and yet hold a small balance. One of the questions to be considered is the holding of quarterly markets in Blenheim for the sale of stock, produce, &c., which we believe would be productive of mutual good to both producers and dealers, and we doubt not but the Borough Council will place any possible facilities in the way of the Society forcarrying out the project./,.
