SYDNEY'S NEW LORD MAYOR. (Australian and N.Z. Cable Association) SYDNEY, Dec. 10; Alderman Joynton Smith, a Laborite nominee, lias been elected Lord Mayoi of Svdney. The City Council, on the grounds ol economy and in view of the state of the Council's finances and the finances of the country generally, has reduced thr Lord Mayor's allowance from £ISOO to £IOOO. . * A MELBOURNE TRAGEDY. MELBOURNE, Dec. 10. Presumably suffering from mental derangement, an elderly man, John Cummins, attacked his sister on returningfrom mass, smashed her head and cut her throat. He then entered a room and similarly murdered another sister. FEDERAL ARBITRATION COURT. T?<e.eeived December 11, 9.20 a.m. MELBOURNE, Dee. 11. The Federal Arbitration Court refused the Steamship Owners' Federation's application to cancel the Waterside Workers'' Federation on the ground that the. union has amended the rules for the better control of members.
