REDFC ET) C I H A ROES. 'WELLINGTON. Feb. II Complaints have been made regarding the, rate- of postage on parcels intended for the men at tlie front. I lie Postmaster-Genera] 'Sir -1. G. Ward) informed a reporter to-day that he had inquired into this matter and found that the Post and Telegraph Department was making no profit at all on the handling of parcels, ' the rates charged being actually below the costof rh'e'service. Ordinary rates on parcels to Egvpt, via Colombo and Sue-/, were:—Fp' to 3lb, 2s Sd ; 31 hj to 71b. 4s 4-d; rib to 111b. 6s. The N'ew Zealand postal authorities wanted to reduce this rate in the interests of soldiers, and they agreed to waive their share of the total charge, namely -td, 7d, and Is on the three classes respectively. It was arranged that parcels should bp via Australia and Sue/., and the Commonwealth Administration, on the representations of Xew Zealand, agreed to reduced charges. The Egyptian Administration was then approached, and agreed to lower its charges by 2J-d on each of the three classes. The results of efforts made by the .New Zealand authorities are shown in the following table:—

Old rates New rates. I sd s d Up to 31h 2 S 1 IV .lib to 71h -1 I 2 7.'. 71b to 111b 0 0 A O.J The extra war charge of U\ has to be added in each case. The New Zealand Post Office agreed to abandon its inland < barges on parcels from Egypt. The rates for parcels M>nt to Egypt, via London, are lower than tho*;o quoted, the charges for the three classes heiticr Is, 2s. and .'ls respectively, but- this route is not recommended, since the time occupied in transit is materially increased. 9TH REINFORCEMENTS. I have read only one reply from a I<m\il body that is not wi'lling to assist. I have not yet received the reply of the Waipa Borough Council, which was the first to make its refusal public. That body appears to be less enthusiastic in its patriotism than the majority of local bodies throughout the Dominion. I am quite sure that it does not reflect the feeling of iho residents in the locality." action in wfllliny:ton. WT.LUXCITOX, Fob. 11. In response to the Recruiting Hoard's circular the Mayor of Wellington convened a conference which was held in the Town Hall to-day. Between 1 '2O and 150 men i were sick for a few days, but 80 of j them were well again quickly, and \ there is no reason to believe that the j trouble is of a serious character.
