INCIDENT IN PARLIAMENT. STATEMENT BY MU PAYNE. FEB UNITED PEESB ASSOCIATION. - WELLINGTON, July 3. While Mr J. Robertson (Otaki) was speaking on tho Address-in-Reply he ivt'ermi to the Government as lieing directed towards unionism. A sensation was caused by the interjection of Mr J. Payne (Grey Lynn) to the effect that the "Government sits* there by bribery and corruption," or that "lie sits there by bribery and corruption." The Prime Minister (Right Hon. W. F. 'Massey) took exception to the remark, and Mr Payne reiterated his ■statement. The Prime Minister then moved, "That the words be taken down." On putting the motion the ''Noes'' called for a division, and on the motion again being put it was carried on the voices. The Prime Minister-then > askodi for an opportunity for Mr Payne to explain. Mr Payne repeated his statement and withdrew from the. Chamber, remarking, "I'm tired of the whole dirty business." The Prime Minister then moved, ' "That the niem'ber for Grey Lynn"bo Mi-mended for the 'remainder of the sitting." Messrs Russell. Wilford, Ell, Witty and Davey urged that the Prime Minister should give Mr Payne another opportunity to withdraw his words. July 3. Since the loss of the Waikare in Dusky Sound in January. 1910. there has .been -a good deal of discussion at times (oncerning the lack of means to make the excursion, to the West Coast N Sounds. The Tourist Department has ■be,en negotiating witji the Union Company and, as a result it is understood that a Red Funnel steamer, probably the Arahura, will be sent to the Sound's in the coming season. The idea is to despatch a vessel once a month during December, January and February from Wellington, calling at Pieton, Nelson, Westport and Greymouth. Passengers will >be landed at the Sounds and will then walk over the hills to the lakes, the tourists from overland joining the > vessel and coming up the coast. This \wiil obviate the steamer being delayed to cruise about the Sounds and enable her to make monthly A CANTERBURY TRAGEDY. CHRISTCHURCH. July 3. A boy while engaged in shepherding on the hilltops above the Eapiki pali, near Lyttelton, this afternoon, dscovered the body of a man suspended by about 4ft of rope from the roof of a tree overhanging a disused quarry. Eraser (Minister for Public Works) to tho effect that the latter is arraying for work for the unemployed, and asking how many are likely to apply. A rep!'' was sent to the Minister euggesting (hat work for ■ 50 men would relieve the situation. FIRE AT TARADALE. NAPIER., July 3. A fire about 7.30 this evening destroyed Mr G. P. Donnelly's fine resilience, "Otntaro," Ta.rada'e. The 18rocmrvl building was completely destroyed. Mr Donnelly and his sipter (Mrs Hoadley) wero at dinner at the time of the outbreak, and the. firo was discovered by :i timid in an upstairs bedroom.
