The temperature in the city fell below zero, and nine deaths are reported,_ due directly or indirectly to the severe weather. 'Many fishing schooners have been wrecked oft' the Massachussets coast, but the loss of life is light. While the cold was at its intensest in New Ycrk, i.mr iires broke out in, the poorei' quarters, and as a result; 1000 persons are homeless. I The firemen were unable to cope with ' the outbreaks'at first owing to the water freezing.
