Owing to an adjustment required of the ringing apparatus of the Gore firebell the bell will be rung this evening about seven o'clock.

A young man named Hugh McDonald, son of Mr John McDonald, of Tapanui, had the misfortune to receive rather serious injuries on Tuesday. While m the act of loading wool at Dalvey his foot slipped off the shaft of the dray on which he was standing and the wheel passed over him. He was conveyed home, where it was found that no bones were broken but that his knees and ankles were badly braised.

During last week the Waikaia dredge was working a block about a chain wide on the south side in order to reach the mam face on the east side. This was completed on Saturday, and there is now a face of about 70yds wide to work. As the wash was always best on the eastern side during the crosscut, it is expected that an improvement will now be effected in the returns. The entrance of the river has been blocked, aiid the dredge would be quite safe in the event of a rise.

returns of the Waimumu Dairy factory have fallen off considerably this season through lack of support by the settlers. At present only 400 gallons of milk per day is being received, yie trouble seems to be that the settlers' holdings are too large 'for dairying and sheep are gone in for more, which at the present prices give a handsome return for less work. Unless the factory receives more support the present will probably be its last season, •there us an abundance of feed in the - ' district, which generally speaking, "is looking well. '

>rn }\aitara correspondent of the iaranaki Herald' wrote on January \\t —"^ wo Du llock teams came into Waitara to-day from Purangi wiih wool. One wtfggon with 14 bales was pulled by 10 bullocks, and a dray with seven bales by six bullocks. This is now becoming an unusual and therefore interesting sight. In reply to* a question as to how many journeys they were going to make, the owners of the teams, Messrs Drake, said that probaly the next time they came into the town the beasts would be going to the freezing works."

The bush fires in the Western Districts were not wholly extinguished by Tuesday night's rain. The fire raged furiously in the' Longwood district and several sawmills were in danger of being destroyed. As it was Kilkelly Bros', mill at Spar Bush and Mclntyre s mill, near Orepuki, were destroyed. Some of the outbuildings and fences at the Orepuki shale works were also destroyed, the damage being estimated at £I6OO. Several of the telephone lines id the bush country have been damaged and communication with several of the mills could not be established yesterday.

At the request of the chairman of,, the Waimumu School Committee Mr G. J. Anderson, M.P., yesterday presented the prizes to the school children. Before doing so he took the opportunity of briefly ad-,' dressing the settlers. He said that although the Minister for Works had promised to have a survey of the Hedgehope-Gore line made during this recess that did not mean that they could rest on their oars. They must, if they wished to s«e the line an accomplished fact, continue their efforts to support him in having the line au-i thorised and finally proceeded with. Money was dear at present and lines were required all over the Dominion, but they must not, therefore, get disheartened if they had to work for their line for some years before they were suceesseful. He had been successful in obtaining a fair share of public expenditure upon their roads and hoped to see closer settlement and prosperity continue as a result,
