"£2O A LIE."
ALLEGED DICTAPHONE EVIDENCE
The campaign for the Mayoralty of New York is ending, amid a whirlwind of excitement and abuse (stated the New ¥ork correspondent of the 'Daily Mail' on October 31), ~ Twelve thousand people last' night crowded Madison Square Garden to listen to Mr John Purroy Mitchell, the anti-Tammany Hall candidate, and as many more were unable to gain admission. While Mr Mitchell was attacking Judge McCall, the Tammany Hall candidate, Judge McCall, at another meeting, was hurling opprobrious personalities at him. Typical .of the tone of the campaign are the following remarks uttered last night by Judge McCall against the proprietor of the New York 'World,' who is supporting Mr Mitchell:—
"This slimy Pulitzer. (Cheers.) If I ever meet him face to face, if I ever get my hands on him, why I'll make him wish he never had been born." In Broadway is the following advertisement: "100,000 lies against McCall wanted. A hundred dollars (£2O) per lie paid." Alleged conversations recorded by dictaphones secretly installed by a detective agency are being published broadcast in the newspapers in proof of the moral obliquity of the Tammany candidates. The betting odds are overwhelmingly against Judge McCall, who admits he is an "organisation man," and will, if elected, consult the organisation leaders regarding appointments.
