FOOTBALL. ' GATE CHARGES AT MATAURA. At last night's meeting of the Mataura Borough Council a letter from the secretary of the Eastern District Sub-Union (Mr T. J. Holland) applying for permission to charge for admission- to football matches at tho liecreation Grounds was considered. Mr T. Carroll, a member of the E.D.S.U., attended in support of this application and said that has union was placed in an .awkward position by . not being ahle to charge for admission to football matches. A number of important matches were played on the ground during tho year, and it would make a considerable difference to the union if it had permission to charge lor admission. At pre.s<>nt it had to appoint a man to go round with the hat which was an unsatisfactory method. In tin* interests of the sport tho speaker said it would help tho union if the council would grant the request. Some discussion ensued on the matter and tho genera] feeling of tho Council was -that, tho sub-union was 1 not the only body to bc> considered. Some people were not interested in the football matches at all, hut went to witness tho hockey ga.me-s. The request was declined. LAWN TENNIS.
