The whole of the South Coast mines are now idle. It is stated that a considerable section did not favor a strike but irritation over police espionage at Sat-ur- ; day's meetings supplied the spark | which united them. The miners ! declare that they never heard I of the police insisting on being present at the masters' meetings, and fail to see why they should attend the men's gatherings. It is hoped that to-day's aggregate meeting will open the way to a settlement; otherwise it is likely that there will be more serious developments. A deputation from the Southern Miners' Federation saw Hon. A. C. 1 ; Carmichael (Minister for Labor) and 1 . submitted proposals that all the strik- ' j ers should return to ,work on condition j that a special tribunal was appointed to decide the matters in dispute, both 1 sides binding themselves to accept the decision, the matters discussed to be the dismissal of Russell and two other * miners. Mr Carmichael offered the services of the industrial registrar as - an intermediary. The registrar will confer with the masters to-day. \ Hon. J. McGowen (Premier) and A. [ C. Carmichael both declined the invita- | tion to attend the aggregate meeting. DOCKYARDMEN'S WAGES. Received March 19, 11.13 a.m. LONDON. March 18. Tho dockyardmen at Portsmouth are asking the Treasury to receive a depuStation in connection with an increase of "wages; otherwise they will convene a oonferenco of all trade unionists ,in Government employment in dockyard towns. The Tramways employees considered the reports by the representatives who attended'three unsuccessful conferences with the company. The latter is not inclined to concede the melt's demands owing to the increased expenditure involved. A proposal to give 14 days' notice to the company was considered, but it was decided to postpone drastic action to a more favorable opportunity.
