Mr Andrew Bain has been asked to stand for Mayoral honors in Jnvercargill in Apri] next, and has promised to give a reply this week. Messrs W. M. Millard, of Dunedin, and N. Stewart, of Invercargill, have received appointments on the teaching staff of the Wellington Boys' College. Mr M. Cash, the well-known axeman of the Western District, met with a severe accident one night last week when riding into Orepuki. It appears that Mr Cash's horse stumbled and rolled right over the rider. On examination Mr Cash was found to have sus-l tained a broken collarbone close to the shoulder.

The death occurred at his residence, Selborno street, Mataura, on Saturday afternoon of Mr William Wallace, after a short illness. Born at Bellarine, Victoria, on June 12, 1860, the deceased arrived in New Zealand in 1880. He afterwards settled at Mataura, where ho has resided ever since. He was married about 1885 to a daughter of Mr Charles McDonald, of Ferndale, and there is a family of five daughters (one of whom is married to Mr R. A. Mullins, of Vn-j derwood) and on oj Son to. mourn their' I°§S. . .*% <,eceaseu was of a very retiring and kindly disposition and was held in high respect by a large circle of friends, who will join in sympathising with the bereaved ones.
