THE DEGREE OF COMMERCE.

LECTURERS APPOINTED. WELLINGTON, Jan. 24. An important new departure was resolved upon, by Victoria College Council to-night, when it was decided definitely to establish lectureships in commerce, one in accountancy subjects and die other in such legal subjects as are required of candidates for the Bachelor cf Commerce degree. Some time ago tlie Council considered the question of establishing the lectureships; but nothing could then be done owing to financial considerations. Now, however, these have been overcome by a generous subsidy from the New Zealand Society of Accountants, and the Council was thus enabled to take action. The Council received a report from a subcommittee appointed to interview the applicants for lectureships and subsequently made the following appointments, each tenable for the year 1912 : Lecturer in commerce subjects, Mr J. S. Barton, at a salary of £250 per annum ; lecturer in legal subjects, Mr "W. F. Ward, at a salary of £IOOO per annum.

A new research scholarship in physics was allotted by the Council to Mr M. Alexander, B.Sc, of Otago University. The scholarship, which is worth £IOO per anaum, is due to the generosity of the donor, who wishes to remain anonymous .

OPENING UP LAND. THE POSITION IN THE NORTH. AUCKLAND. Jxa. 24. Mr W. C. Kensington, Cnder-Secre-tniy for Lands, is at present on a brief visit to Auckland, after a rapid trip through the Bay of Plenty, made for owners would soon be necessary. It should be remembered that some 2,000,000 acres in the North were reserved under the Kauri Gum Industries Act, and that previous attempts to resume portions of them had been greatly resented by those interested in the gum trade. Much of this land, though not rich, was well adapted for fruit-growing and in some cases for sheep-raising, and a* the gum became gradually worked out the land would be resumed for the benefit of the settler. At present the whole staff of the Auckland Lands Office was working at fall pressure in consequence of the opening up of lands in various parts <tf the province, especially in the King Country. It was intended to open up a block of 23,000 acres of fairly good land in West Taupo In the course of a month or two., and an active policy was being pursued in other directions.
