PREFERENTIAL RAILWAY BATE.

AUCKLAND DISSATISFACTION.

AUCKLAND, Jan. 1\

The Auckland Provincial Executive ■of tbe New Zealand Farmers Union at j» meeting to-day discussed the differ«nt rates ruling on the New Zealand railways in respect to local and imported articles.

The se«retary in a report to tke pjxecutive, said that efforts to have preferential railway freights removed had not yet met with success, and though the Minister for Railways had received requests from the Executive and many branches of the Union to have them removed, his answers had been in the negative.

A letter on the subject from the '.on. J. A. Millar. Minister for R: ..ways, was read, in v.hi;-h the Minis* ir stated that, with a # vie\v to assisting the development of the count:* and helping to local industries to provide .employment for the artisans and other classes of skilled and unskilled labor, the Hoverument many years ago adopted the policy of carrying New Zealand natural pr«i\jc*.s and articles locally

* niauviai-Vjicd at a ,'ower rate than the imported articles. That this course was wise was shown by the extent of the local industries to-day and the general conditoin of the people of New Zealand. It was not considered that the circumstances were such as to warrant any departure from the policy that .had proved so beneficial in the past or that the adoption of the suggestion of the Farmers' Union would commend itself to the general community. The Minister added that, after giong the matter full consideration he could not see his way clear to make any altera* tion in the existing tariff charges.

After considerable dissatisfaction with the reply had been expressed, the following resolution was carried: "That the available Crown land in that part of the Dominion was practically exhausted, and purchases from the native the purpose of inspecting the various rivers and swamp improvement works in progress there. In reply to a question by a 'Star' reporter, Mr Kensington said that the opening up. of land in the North was progressing as rapidly as possible; but, as a matter of fact, copies of the reply sent by the Minister for Railways and copies of the preferential rates in existence be sent to the Dominion Executive and also to each Provincial Executive, asking that they 00-operate with the Auckland Executive in having the matter brought forcibly 'before Parliament when it meets."
