MATAURA BORO.' COUNCIL.

MONTHLY MEETING. The monthly meeting of the Mataura Borough Council was held in the Council Chambers last night, when there were present:—The Mayor (Mr A. Balneaves) and Councillors J. Heslin, W. P. Thorn, A. N. Mac Gibbon, W. McLeod. C. Coombes, Shore, J. H. Park and W. B. Reid. CORRESPONDENCE. D. M. Cochrane, secretary of the Southland Frozen Meat Company and Produce Export Co., Ltd., wrote informing the Council that Mr A. Grierson had been appointed to act as the company's valuer to value section 14, block XII., Mataura. The letter was received and Mr Robert Miller was appointed to act on behalf of the Council. A. Reid, secretary of the Mataura Athletic Society, applied for permission to charge for admission to the Recreation Grounds on Boxing Day, December 26, on the occasion of the annual sports. The request was granted on the usual conditions. The secretary of the Otago and Southland Underwriters' Association forwarded a copy of the revised rules governing the exhibition of animated pictures and asking the Council to adopt them. The letter was held over pending the framing of by-laws. S. Sleeman wrote regarding gravel required for the work being carried out I on Boundary road. He considered his contract price of 2s per yard for delivering gravel in the borough was insufficient in this case, being worth 3s per yard. It was resolved that tenders bo called for gravelling on Boundary road. Joshia Wilson complained that several residents were emptying rubbish and ashes on section 24, block XIII., leased by him, and asked the Council's assistance in the matter. It was resolved: "That the inspector of nuisances be instructed to notify all offenders to remove rubbish and ashes from the place in question within a certain time, failing which action will be taken." ACCOUNTS. The following accounts were passed for payment:—-Town clerk, £8 13s 4d; surfaceman, £8 lis; roads and works, £3 lis 6d; interest on debentures, £ll ss; contract No. 67, £54 ss; National Mortgage and Agency Co., Ltd., £1 Is; 'Mataura Ensign/ £23 13s 3d; F. J. Sherwood, 10s 9d; D. Wilson 10s—total, £ll2 Is lOd.

Cemetery: Jas. Park, £2 18s Id ; sexton, £4 19s. VALUATIONS. Messrs Taylor and Wallace wrote stating that they had examined the improvements on section 19, block XII., held by Mrs C. McGowan, which they estimated at £2O and the ground at 16s per acre per annum. The valuation was approved. Messrs Taylor and McGowan wrote stating that they estimated the value of the improvements on section 16, block XV., held by Mr W. Waddell, at £2O and the ground rent at 15s per annum. The valuation was approved. John Taylor estimated the value of improvements on section 49, block VII., held by Mrs Allison, at £l3 and the ground rent at 16s per acre per annun. The matter was held over to enable inquiries to be made regarding a fence. REPORTS. The borough surfaceman reported on his work for the month, which included filling in ruts in Selbourne, Hull and Carteret streets and Boundary road, painting at the cemetery, cutting broom on the river bank, cleaning ditches and tables in various streets, repairing a bridge on the Gore road, ploughing and scooping on Boundary road and Crawford's road, spreading gravel, cleaning the traffic bridge and digging graves. The borough ranger reported having seized 12 cows and 18 horses on the streets of the borough during the month and two cows and five horses were impounded. Both reports were adopted. GENERAL. Councillor Mac Gibbon complained that some motor cyclists rode on* the footpaths. Only the other day a motorist passed his place riding on the footpath at a furious rate. He spoke of the danger to children and others, and he considered that some action should be taken to abate the practice. Councillor Shore said broom on Suburb, Back and Dover streets required removing. The matter was referred to the surfaceman. The Mayor stated that while surveying Messrs McConnell and Co.'s property he had instructed Mr Blaikie to make a survey of the section purchased by the Council from Mr H. Cameron. The Mayor's action was approved. The Council went into committee to consider the tenders foro the work of forming the footpath along Selbourne street past the property of Mr Sherwood and others. The tender of Mr Jas. Henry was accepted.
