Rev. Jas. B. Smellie, Presbyterian minister at Papahura, and formerly of Rangiora, Wynclham and Feefton, died at Rotorua on Monday. Captains Hamilton. MaoArthur-On-slow and! Simson, of Auckland, who went to South Africa with tho 7th contingent, has been elected a member of the Johannesburg City Council. Mr lan Simson, who is a Liberal candidate for Hawke's Bay, is a brother of Mr Donald Simson. The death occurred at Fort rose on the 24th inst of Mr Edward: Attwood, a very old and res]>ecte(f resident. The deceased was horn at Canterbury, Kent, England, in August, 18H8. He sailed for New Zealand in 18(50 arriving at Port Chalmers by the ship Evening Star. He started business at Mornington, Duuedin. and afterwards took part in the Gabriel's Gully gold rush. Mr Attwood was also well-known all over the other goldiiekls of Central Otago. In 1872 he commenced farming at Pine Bush and' afterwar<ls purchased the Sandhill Farm near Fortrose where he resided for a number of years, until he acquired the accommo-dation-house at Fortrose township which he conducted until his death. There is a family of two sons, Messrs Robert Attwood (Fortrose) and George Attwood (Duuedin) and one daughter, Mrs F. W. Brown (Mataura). Mrs Attwood <fied ten years ago.
