HALLEY'S COMET.

THE EARTH AND THE TAIL. WHAT A SCIENTIST SAW. L. PER UNITED TEESS Af?SOCIATTOK. AUCKLAND, May 21. Mr Stevenson, F.R.A.S.. reports that both on Friday and this morning he saw the tail of Halley's comet stretching across the Jieavens from near the horizon to nearly the zenith in the eastern sky. The tail' was much fainter than the Milky Way. Another bread band of light on what looked like another and broader tail stretched upwards in wedge shape from toward'- the horizon, and between it and the original tail a darker portion of sky intervened. In Mr Stevenson's opinion we have passed through a section of the comotV tail. It may be looked for after sunset to-night.
