Replying to a deputation of fishermen, who asked that the regulations for netting trout at the mouths of rivers and estuaries be made, Mr Millar said he was satisfied that trout had become acclimatised to the sea. lie was going to have some experi- ; menial trawling done, and this might throw light on the matter. This would apply to sm-h rivers as the Wailaki, Selwyn or Rnkaiu, but not to estuaries ; any trout caught outside this limit should be allowed to belong to fishermen. In tho spawning season he would absolutely prohibit the taking of trout, and would not permit under any conditions the use of set nets in narrow waters.
