That the natural enemy to the rab-! bit —the weasel—is doing good work can scarcely been gainsaid after a perusal of the following- incident, supplied io the 4 Tuapeka Times ' by *Slv 11. I'eattie, who hay been spending- his holiday in Lawrence. He says : When out shooting on Mr 'lames Robertson's home farm the other day I was the witness of an exhibition of rabbiting by a natural enemy of tin- rabbit —viz., the weasel. The little chap was on the face opposite to myself, and my fittention was drawn to his busy, brisk movements. Ho dived into all the likely-looking holes until one was found in which there were rabbits. Then, with a rush, he fastened on the | neck of a young rabbit. This J saw ! him do about three times in half an j hour. In one instance, the mot her; was close at hand, and when the little one squealed, I was astonished to see her rush up and separate the weasel and her offspring. Hut Mr Weasel was not to be denied, and very soon had the little one by the neck again. Another thing that struck me was a hawk hovering in the vicinity. It looked as if he were waiting for the hotels at Warren (N.S.W.) expired in October, but the fact was overlooked both by (he licensee and the authorities. and the sale of liquor proceeded as usual.
