Monday, November 21. I The Council met at the usual hour. Present—The Mayor (Mr D. l>. Poppelwell), Councillors Baker, Faitt, A. A. MacGHJbon, Burrows, J. MacGibfijon, Speden, Copland,'and W'allis. Miss Cowan submitted plans and specifications of additions to tho Wiliard Temperance Hotel, and also - applied for permission to deposit building material on the roadway fronting the building.—Plans referred to the Finance Committee to report; permission to deposit building material granted. Mrs W. O'Brien asked the Council to erect two additional rooms and effect certain alterations at the house occupied by her and which belonged to the Borough.—Council cannot see its way to make the alterations asked for. G. B. Paterson and Co. asked permission to connect their premises temporarily with the old main drain for the purpose of carrying off rain water.—Granted. Intimation of an election of a member to represent the grouped boroughs on the Southland Hospitals and Charitable Aid Board was received. A similar notice in regard to the Wallace and Fiord Hospital Trust was also received. The Minister in charge of the Valuation Department asked the Council to express its opinion iu regard to representations made from time to time that one of the assessors under the Government Valuation of Land Act should be nominated by tho Cotmiy Council. or Borough Council whose district is at the time undergoing revision. He asked the Council if there would be any difficulty in selecting a suitable representative in tho Borough.—Received; Council is satisfied with the present system. E. C. Smith, solicitor, wrote regarding Mrs Landels' lease of two corporation sections opposite the :how grounds from the Council. He understood the Council objected to the lease being for fourteen years on the ground that the term fixed was seven years. His client had taken up the lease on the understanding that it ■was for fourteen years. So far as lie could gather tho term mentioned at the time of the sale was fourteen years, and the lease was taken up bv Mr Faitt after the sale and sold to the writer's client on that understanding. Mrs Landels could not see her way to accept a seven veirs' lease, and he asked the Council to complete the lease as submitted, (for fourteen years).—The Mayor said a misunderstanding appeared to i ave arisen in regard to the matter. It was'certainly intended that the 1-use should be for seven years—Councillor Faitt said that at the time of the sale the conditions were stated to be fourteen years.—Tlip matter was .•e'erred to the Finance Committee with power to act. The Works Committee reported recommending (I) that the engineer report on the drainage of Halton street: (-) that the formation of new roads near the Waimea line be held ever in the meantime : (:{) that Oldham and Hyde streets be araded as soon as (tossible, and if practicable the gra.ler should be obtained for the purpose : (4) that the surfaceman be put on :.t Ashton street for a day or two to till up ruts in the footpath and to place some gravel on the" path : also that the Inspector of Nuisances take steps to have the block in the water channel removed by the person who caused it ; (a) that the large cost of forming a new roatl to the eem ;tery hardly justifies the Council taking it over in an unformed state : (0) that Mr 1 toddy's gift of a concrete water trough lie accepted and that it be placed near the edge of the footpath about one chain south of the post office.—The report was adopted. Applications were made for the use of the Town Hall at a reduced rate on December 2C> and 27 for purpose of holding competitions under the auspices of the Gore District Band of Hope Union.—The Mayor supported the application ami said he had been aski*l to preside at the gathering. He would willingly do so. but coming as it did in the middle of the holidays, he would probably be absent from town. —After brief discussion it was rcnlved to reduce the rental to one-half—-viz., 25s the two nights. After deciding to give the owners of building material deposited on Mersey street notice to tidy up the piles of timber ami bricks before show day, the Council adjourned.
