Mr Grierson (Auckland) won the chess championship at Dunedin with 6£ points. An outbreak of anthrax hae occurred at Woodlands. Calcutta bonedust is blamed as the oause. Mr Alex. Bartleman, formerly manager of the Bank of Otago, and latterly secretary to several mining companies, died at Dunedin on Sunday after a long illness. The Delhi Durbar in connection with the proclamation of Edward VII as Emperor of India has been conducted on a scale of unparalleled splendor. Lord lloberts has accepted the invitation of the Honorable Artillery Company of Boston to visit America in September. The King of Saxony is in a critical condition. It is semi-oflioially announced that he is unlikely to survive beyond a few days. The Dutch Church has circulated an order throughout the Transvaal, refusing the Communion to ex-National Scouta, or baptism to their children.
Mr Chamberlain, who visted Spion Kop, met Lord Milner at Charleston and reached Pretoria at midnight on Saturday. A large and enthusiastic crowd welcomed bim, but there was no ceremony.
