CHAMPION PLOUGHING MATCH.

THE CHAMPIONSHIP TO CHARLTON. The twentry-fourth annual gathering was held at Makarewa Junction yesterday. The day was a bitterly cold one, but despite this the meeting was an unqualified success, there being numerous entries, good woi'k, and a large attendance of the public. The principal interest centred in the match for the Championship of Southland, nine competitors facing the music for the much-coveted honor, which fell to the lot of W. G. Ladbrook, of Charlton, who steered a Gardiner plough to victory, and whose win was pn'all sides regarded as fairly earned. P. McDermid gained second place and W. Young third. In the doublefurrow class Geo. Milne was placed first, and in the single-furrow division R. Murray Becured premier position, there being only one other competitor. There was a big class for the digger ploughs, in which much interest was centred, Malcolm Gray annexing the first prize. A horse-jumping competition was got off during the afternoon, ' the first prize for hunters going to Miss Mann, and for high jump to McKay's Seabreak. In the evening, the customary dinner was held in the Prince of Wales Hotel, nearly ' 100 persons being present. Mr A. Gray (President) occupied the chair, and the customary toasts were honored.
