Clinton Notes.

The weather has at last cleared up, and people are looking forward to a nice summer. Tho grass and crops are very backward in consequence of the excessive moisture we have had of late. Farmers are now all busy working up the land for the turnip crop. The County elections passed off quietly yesterday. For the Clinton riding, Messrs McLauchlan and Rhodes were the candij dates, the former winning by 19 votes. For the Pomahaka riding, Mr Wallace was returned by a majority of 20 votes. The other candidates were Messrs Scott and R. Irving. The Clinton Cricket Club tried conclusions with the Tapanui club on Satur- ; day last, and were badly beaten. Tapaj nui went in first and made 70. Clinton | could only respond with 25. The Tapanui men all showed good form, but the Clinton men wei'e sadly out of practice. After tho match, both clubs dirjed to--1 gether at Coghlan's private hotel. ! Another match was played here on Monday, against Pukerau. The day being a public holiday, a good number .of spectators turned out. The Clinton Brass Band was also in attendance, and livened up things considerably. The match again turned out to be one-sided, Pukerau winning by 21 runs. In justice to the Clinton team, I must say that they had all the worst of the luck, as the wicket was very soft, and Pukerau, winning the toss, had far the best wicket to bat on. A concert and dance, in aid of the cricket club funds, was held in the evening, and turned out a great siccess. About d6B was taken at the door. Things political are quiet here just now, but will likely be livened up before the week is out. Mr Edie speaks here tonight, aud Mr Thomson on Saturday night.
