GORE TOWN BOARD.
An adjourned meeting of this Board was held on Friday last, there being present — Commissioners Green (chairman), Hehorr, Beattie, and Canning. The clerk to the County Council wrote stating that no deferred-payment moneys were available for work in Broughton street. It was agreed that the town district was being treated most cavalierly by the county, and on the motion of Messrs Canning and Beattie it was resolved that the attention of the member for the riding should be called to the matter.
The clerk to the County Council further wrote, requesting a refund of dog license fees belonging to the county collected by the Town Board's Inspector of Nuisances, and cautioning the Board to abstain, in future from the practice of collecting fees for dogs whose owners resided beyond town boundaries. The Inspector, was. present, and denied going out of town for fees, although he might occasionally .have registered dogs owned by visitors to the town. He was positive,, however, that Constable Fretwell, representing the county, , had colleted fees from anyrate one town resident. Mr Beattie moved that the County Council be informed that their collector had received taxes in the town district ; that on their being refunded to the Town Board an adjustment of accounts woiild ,take place j. (and further that tb,e letter of their clerk was most uncalled for in so far as the caution was concerned. Mr Heheer seconded the motion, which was carried, although Mr Canning wished it couched in somewhat stronger terms.
The Chairman intimated that since last meeting he had seen Mr Shanks, their County member, who had promised to see the gravelling of the main road through, Gore from the crown to the kerbing of the footpath completed as soon as the wea'her was more favorable for such work.
It was agreed on the motion of Messrs. Canning and Helierr that,, the ; Town Hall should be taken over from the contractors on receipt of the architect's certificate expected next day, the only thing i remaining to ( be done being the placing of ' a' shield; with scroll oii either side, in front of the building. Only one tender was received for the. lease of the Town Hall — that of Mr Harry Scott, L4O. On 1 the 'motion of Messrs Beattie and Heherr this was accepted. .One tender only was received for the gravelling and kerbing of Mersey street footpath, and as this was considerably above the engineer's estimate Mr Canning moved that the Works Committee endeavor to arrange for the work being done at or less than that estimate ; failins: this, that a strip of gravel belaid down from M'Lean's corner to the Town Hall. This was carried on the chairman's casting vote, Messrs Beattio and Heherr being in favor of less expenditure than their opponents desired to incur. The Inspector of Nuisances was instructed to stop the cartage of earth from the county road by Mr lluslia, as the material would likely be wanted to fill up the road at some fixture , time. The Board then went into committee on finance.
