JUNIOR CUP MATCH

The second of a series of matches for tho Junior Cup was played in Draper’s Paddock on Saturday between the Athletics (Blues) and Unions (Reds), and resulted in a win for tho latter by three points (a goal) to nil. Ilealy captained the new club, whose first appearance it was on tho field, while JPCallum acted as skipper for the latter. On tho men appearing on the field, the spectators generally agreed that in weight tho Unions •would doubly outdo their opponents, but they soon found to their clisina}' that the Athletics wero not to bo trifled with. Burns commenced the game by kicking off for tho Blues, but the ball was quickly returned and forced down. After the kick-off the Blues, headed by their captain, rushed it into the Reds’ twentylive, only to bo driven back by main force, and the Blues were again forced down. They now began to get desperate, with tho result that after some good rushes, they managed to forco the Reds down. Tho ball, after being kicked off and returned, was kept for the rest of the second spell with’u the Reds’ twenty-five, Play again commenced by Coster kick.ng off for tbo Reds, but tho leather was smartly returned, and for a time kept in tho centre of the field, but tho weight of the Unions again began to lull, as they were soon on tho evo of scoring. A force down soon relieved the Bines, who now began to play with a will, and by a neat dribble between Burns and Mealy the ball was brought near to the Rods’ line. There it remained f#r some time, but the Reds’ forwards again worked tho leather into tho centre of tho field, and from tbcnco into their opponents’ twonty-five, where Williams obtained a mark, from which Coster kicked a goal Por the rest of (he game play was fairly even, as somo of the Blues were now beginning to warm into tho game. Por the losers, A Chuck, Burns, Farmer, Mealy, Patcliott, Carter

and M'Cusker played the host game, as v most, of tho others wero out of practice. ' p'or the winners, Coster, Williams, Francis, Beauchamp, M‘f!alluia, and Himson played up to their usual form, the iast-named being in extra good trim. Tho gamo throughout must have boon very miserable to tbo players, as tho prmnd was nothing but miul, and the Union forwards certainly cannot be complimented on the rough uncivilised play most of them indulged in. Messrs Jv. M‘lver aud J. Clinch acted as umpires for the Reds and Blues respectively, while P. 1 >odson |gave overy satisfaction as referee.

Mr R. T , Scihlon, whoso death was recorded last week, was a native of Lancashire, 20 years of afro, oft 1J tin high, and weigbod 12st. lie was a good forward—unquestionably ono of tbo line.-t in tbo North of England- At one time Re played with the Broughton Rangers, but for some seasons before bo took bis , departure for ilie colonies he was a member of the famous Swintou Club. He played in tho Lancashire matches for six years before bo left for the Antipodes, three times in North v. South, and earned reputation as an international player, played with Li gland against Scotland, Ireland and Wales. Ho was a young man of a very genial d-'sppsiiio 1. and was chosen captain of the I ngliih team as much for his social qualities as for his undoubted abilities as a footballer. So far as we can learn, he was unmarried. Mr Sodden, although only a few days in Wellington with his team, made the acquaintance of a large nurnbjr of our readers, and general regret was expressed in the city when it became known that he had met with an untimely end —Post,
