OMAKA ROAD BOARD

Saturday, July 21

Present : Messrs Sinclair (Chairman), Coleman, Jackson and Parker. The object of the meeting was to meet the members of the Awatere Road Board with a view to a conference regarding the proposal to send a deputation to Wellington to interview the Minister of Public Works re the construction of a|road to the Awatere by Government. Tho Chairman explained that at the laat meeting of tho Board it was deemed advisable to press this matter upon Government, as the railway was making such slow progress. A good road to Awatere would open up a large tract of country. However willing, the Cinika K,oad Board were unable to make the road.

Mr Coleman pointed out that the absence of Messrs Redwood and Clifford showed that they did not take much interest in tho matter.

The Chairman said that Messrs Clifford and Redwood had undertaken to get up a potition in favor of the road, hut owing to their absence no such petition was before the Board

Mr Parker : For my part I am in favor of going on with the railway. A lot of money lias been expended on the railway which is now lying unremunerativo, and the material for the permanent way is lying at tho station. Mr Coleman : lam f Hie same opinion Mr Hall (the only representative of the Awatere Road Board present) said in reply to Mr Coleman that the Dash wood Pass route would suit the district bent. Mr Coleman said if that route were adopted, the question was <•{ very little interest to the Oinaka Road Board, as only a very small portion of the route was included in tho Board district.

After a pause Mr Coleman : As the prime movers in the scheme are not present, I don’t see the use of sitting here any longer. The othc-r members concurred, and the meeting adjourned.
