PICTON ROAD BOARD

Saturday, July 21. The usual monthly meeting of the above Board was held in the Borough Chambers, Blenheim, on Saturday, and was attended by Messrs C. O’Sullivan (Chairman;, Smith, Bragg and Randall. EXCHANGE OF ROADS. A letter was received from Mr J. C. Chaytor re exchange of road. He pointed out that on the 20th August, ISS7, he had waited on the Board and had offered these exchanges, which he considered would ha a decided advantage to the whole district, on condition that the Board should par the cost of making the exchanges ; and a resolution had been passed accepting his offer. On the strength of that he was having a fence erected on the north side of the new line of road io White’s Bay which included the ford across the deep swamp. The writer then went on to refer to the advantages that would accrue to the Board by |the exchange. The Board bad let a contract to erect a bridge over the big ditch at the

end of Thomas Road, which would only give access to a private road on his property if these exchanges were not made. Ho had since found out that that part of the proposed exchange on White’s Bay Road waj provided for by act of Provincial Couucii in 1873, and this had been carried into effect.

The Secretary referred to the minutes of the meeting of the 20th August, ISS7, and found it recorded “ that the alteration be made.”

Mr Bragg said he was strongly under tho impression that it had been decided at the meeting in question that Mr Chaytor should pay all expanses in connection with the exchange. However, it did not seem to have been recorded on the minutes. He thought that as the road would be of value to Mr Chaytor only, and none whatever to the public, Mr Chaytor should bear all expenses. The Chairman moved that consideration of the matter stand over till next meeting.

Mr Bragg seconded this, seeing there was not a full attendance at the meeting. By next meeting they might be able to say whether the road was for the benftt of the district, or for Mr Chaytor’s benefit alone.

The motion was carried. TIIE ELEVATION

Mr W. Entwistle, brickrnaker, The Elevation, wrote stating - that he had pointed out to the Inspector of the Board on several occasions respacting the ditch past the end of his brick shed, which was blocked up with metal from tho road. He said that if tho ditch was not cleared within fourteen days from date, he would do the work himself, and charge the cost to the Board. However, if tlio Beard agreed to it, he would clear the ditch without further delay for Ll. The letter was merely minuted as received. THE BRIDLE TRACK. Mr J. P. Salisbury, of Ngakuta Bay, wrote drawing the Board’s attention to the state of tho bridlo track near the flat land in Ngakuta Bay. It had now become a swamp, aud was seldom used by travellers. Tho distance was about ten chains, and a ditch required to be dug that distance. He offered to cut tho ditch and throw out the stuff, so as to form the bridle track, at half what he considered it would take to do it. The Inspector had estimated tho cost at 10s per chain, but he (Mr Salisbury) would do it at the rate of 5s per chain. Mr Bragg moved that consideration of the matter stand over until next meeting. Ho considered tho Board had spent quite enough on the track. They only got L 3 or LI in rates from it, whereas it cost them L3O or LIO a year to maintain it. He thought it was unjust to the ratepayers in other parts of the district that the Board should spend any more money on it.

The motion was seconded by Mr Randall, and carried.

CHARITABLE AID

A communication was read from the Secretary of tho Picton 11. and O. A. Board, referring to a resolution passed by tho Picton Road Board, recommending that the charitable aid given to James Carter, of Para, be stopped. Ho was instructed to write and request that the Board give its reasons for so doing, as the man was in tlio hospital with a bad hand. Mr Bragg said ho could explain a few matters in connection with this case. He had moved a motion at a previous meeting to the effect that charitable aid be discontinued to tho man, as he had heard that he was earning 6s a day, and thus did not requiro assistance. Mr Bragg had siuco found out that the report about the man earning 6s per day had been all “ blow.” He moved that the aid be still given to him. Tho motion was carried. TENDERS, Tho tender of Messrs Western aud Morriu for No. 3 contract at 33s per chain, was, on the motion of the Chairman, accepted. The only tender received for filling in the big drain was from George Creech, who offered to do the work for LI 2 3s.

Members thought that was a very low price for the work. Mr Bragg pointed out that the ratepayers in the vicinity had volunteered to pay half the cost, and he moved, That tho tender be accepted when the ratepayers’ LG was deposited with tho Secretary. Tho motion was seconded by the Chairman, and carried.
