Gisborne, July 21. Tho Herald’s correspondent supplies tlio following further particulars of the Waiapu murder William Turei was aged 26 and was possessed of a violent, moody and ungovernable temper, and ha* frequently ill-used his wife, besides having on several occasions threatened o kill her. Ilia wife, Mary Turie, was 3 years of age and was a tidy and industrious woman. Tho marriage was forced upon her and before it she was inclined to another man. William, in his fits of rage, use to cast up this former attachment and on one occasion threw her into the firo. A week ago William’s father, told his son that he must loave the place, whereupon William threatened to kill him. On Eriday last William and his wife left their whare to go to tho plantation, William carrying tho child. Before leaving ho loaded his gun. The woman soeiug him doing so asked what he was going to do, and he replied, “ Shoot pheasants.” Later on a report of a gun was heard, and on search being made, the body of the unfortunate woman was found in the scrub, her head being cleft in twain, ono side being a mass of bruises and disfigurement, and almost beaten to pulp, with burnt fragments of clothing about the neck. The murderer was tracked to tho ranges, but nothing has been seen or hoard of him since. The Maoris are collecting from all parts to Waiapu, and aro very bitter against tho murderer. Intelligence was received in town this afternoon that, a collision had occurred between Kura Ivupa, a celebrated Whangarei chief, and Eru Hiri, chief of another tribe. They and their followers met and had a severe conflict, in which two men were killed on Tauran’s side, and a number wounded on the other side. The cause of tho quarrel has not yet been ascertained.
