THE Marlborough Times. PUBLISHED EVERY SATURDAY, JUNE 23, 1888.

'"h.A.C.B. Society. —The quarterly meeting of members of this Society wil. be held on Monday next, 25th inst, when important business will be transacted. The Dashwood Pass Railway Con-TRACT.-Mr W. N. Blair, Engineer-in-Chief for the South Island, accompanied by Mr Fitzgerald, of the local Public Works Department, inspected the Dashwood contract yesterday, recently completed by Mr Parker. Hunt Club.— To-day’s moetwill bo at Mr Isaac Gifford’s, Spring Creek, at 3 pm. sharp. On the last two occasions when the meet has been fixed for Mr Gifford’s the unpropitious state of tne weather has prevented the run taking place. Let us hope to-day’s weather will prove favorable to our hunting friends.

A Novel Match.—Wo hear that a football match is being arranged between a team picked from the members of the Blenheim Rifles and Blenheim City limes, and a team from the Marlborough Hussars and Blenheim School Cadets. As many of the members of tho companies mentioned arc prominent members of our local football clubs, two very good teams ought to be got together. Accounted Fob. —The following iB the statement of accounts iu connection with the Turnbull Memorial Fund By subscriptions received, £23 7s. To grave plot (cemetery trustees), £1; material for and erection of monument, £l7 9s 7d ; photographs of do, 10s; memoriam cards, £3 ; postages on tomb, cards, etc., 7s 6d. -J. G. Fildes, Hon. Treasurer; H. B. Huddleston,Hon. Secretary. Great Clearing Sale.— Messrs Litchfield and Son announce that they will hold a great clearing sale of winter stock of all kinds, commencing to-day and continuing next weok. For convenience of sale tho stock has been moved to their old premises, next to the Bank of New Zealand. The terms are spot cash, and as the new tariff will put from 20 to 25 per cent on most of the goods, the opportunity is a good one for laying in a stock.

A Fraud. —A man, who came over from Wellington a day or two ago, was arrested yesterday for obtaining money under false pretences. Ho was hawkinground a subscription list, ostensibly in aid of a friend who was in ill-health, and who wished to proceed to Germany for medical treatment. Enquiries elicited the fact that the friend was a myth, and that he was merely endeavoring to impose upon tho credulous and benevolent minded. He will be brought up at the Court this morning.

Literary and Debating Society.— At the Debating Society last evening there was an animated discussion on the new Tariff, soveral of the mombera showing considerable acquaintance with tho principles which should regulate taxation. The Tariff was unanimously condemned as being calculated to interfere with the progress of tho Colony. The whole of the members present save one favored the Freetrade view of the question. Next week the evening will be occupied by readings and reoitations given by the members.

Sudden Death. —A man named Walton, a resident of the Onamalutu district, died very suddenly yesterday afternoon. He was engaged in a Court case during the day, and was being driven homo in company with a brother and one or two other persons, when his condition became so serious that the party returned to Blenheim. He was taken to the Grosvenor Hotel, and medical assistance was sent for. Dr Naim was quickly in attendance, but the man breathed his last immediately afterwards. It is stated that deceased was known to be suffering from heart disease, and it is supposed that iis death resulted therefrom. A n inquest will he held this morning.

He ijXD not see It.—The R.M. Court ■was occupied during tho greater part of yesterday afternoon in the hearing of a lengthy, though interesting, case. Mr M‘Nal> was just finishing the crossexamination of the last witness, and as a last shot he asked him the following question, “Now, candidly tell me, don’t you think he was running away ?” Of course, by “ he,” Mr M‘Nab meant the horse, but witness evidently book him up wrong. With a look of horror, eorrowful to behold, the witness immediately said, “What, with the girl?” This remark was received with great laughter, and it was some time before Mr M‘Nab could recover himself in order to explain, ,1 don’t mean running away with the girl. Witness unparently was greatly relieved on this explanation, and in a solemn tone ho blurtered forth, “ Oh, I beg your pardon.” He did not see where the joke came in, and evidently could not make out how he had been the cause of so much merriment.

4 Useful Hint.— At yesterday’s sitting of the R.M. Mr Allen threw out a veiw useful hint in regard to the issue of summonses. In one of the cases which came on for hearing, plaintiff sued for a certain amount on a dishonored promissory note. A copy of the note had not been attached to the summons, plaintiff producing the original in Court. Mr Allen said that that was not sufficient, as a copy should have been attached to the summons, in order that defendant might see it Without that being done, it could scarcely be called a true “ bill of particulars ” Had defendant been present and raised the objection he (Mr Allen) would have upheld it, hut he took his absence &s a confession, and entered judgment accordingly- Another discrepancy Sir Allen pointed out was the neglect of plaintiffs, when, suing on a dishonored promissory note, to specify the date from which the interest m same was calculated.
