Muddle and Embezzlement by a Town Clerk.
Per Press Association. Inveeca rgill, June 19. J. F. De Joux, late town .clerk at Noith Invercargill, was committed for trial on three charges of alleged embezzlement of the borough funds, the other charges being adjourned. Accused said the t lie had got muddled in book keeping, having too much to do. The total defalcations are stated at L 1,91.1, and it said they have been going on during the on,ire period in which be held office, about t ight years, undetected till the Government system, of audit was introduced. His method in the eases heard is alleged to have been to accept payment of rates and give receipts, entering only a portion of them in the books. His salary was L2O, and the alleged embezzlements average Ll6O a year.
