The Austrahans in their first innings against the Englishmen scored 297 ; Bonnor 72, M‘Donnell 67, Warrall 46, and Trott 37. Grace took six wickets. England in their second innings have lost 7 wickets for 74; Docker 15, Peel 11, and Bambridge 10. Turner took four wickets and Ferris three. The bowling of the Australians was excellent, and much admired. A good wicket had been prepared. The frozen mutton by the Ruapehu is being sold at 4-I-d. In the House of Commons Mr J. Morley moved the omission of the clause in the Local Government Bill, reserving to quarter sessions control over chief constables. The Government were defeated by a majority of 30. Lord Hartington and a number of Unionists supported Mr Morley. A Royal Commission has been appointed to inquire into the working of the Metropolitan Board of Work. The evidence so far shows that two officials have received £16,000 as bribes. Paris, June 19.
The election for the district of Charente in the Chamber of Deputies took place to-day, and resulted in the return of a Bonapartist candidate, M. Dourelede, President of the French Patriotic League. The Radical candidate was at the bottom of the jioll. Sydney, June 20. Captain Ross of the ship Berdice which went ashore at Newcastle during a heavy gale, on sth inst, has had his certificate suspended for twelve months. Adelaide, June 20. A severe shock of earthquake was felt yesterday at Blumare, County Flinders. Melbourne, Jure 20. Parliament has. adopted addresses of condolence to Dowager Empress of Germany.
