(Per Press Association.) Ha vera, June 5. George Bates, clerk cf the County Council, was arrested last night cnarged by tho Grovernro or 't Auditor with embezzlement of two sums, each of under L 7, of the County funds. Ho was remanded for a week. Bail was accepted in two securities of LIOO each. Tho arrest has caused some stir, owing to the position of accused, Christchurch, June 5.
At the R.M. Court this morning before R. Beetlmm and H. J. ’Tall, Jonathan Roberts was sentenced to 12 months hard labor for escaping from gaol at Timaru. lie pleaded guilty. Mr Beetham contrasted his case with that of Crabtree, saying that he was entitled to • more mercy than thaih offender, as after his escape he conducted himself decently and attempted to earn'his living honestly.
