Sydney, June 5. Sir John Douglas in his annual report on New Guinea affairs says he has received no contribution from the South Australian Government towards the cost of administration. With regard to future administration it will be impossible to apply British law in a tecnical sense to Native affairs, and for many years to come a personal Government must prevail to great extent. During the recent heavy gale the ship Borbice, from Melbourne, went ashore outside Newcastle Harbor, early in the morning. The ship became a total wreck, but the crew were saved by the Rocket Brigade. M‘Gregor, the bank note forger, has been sentenced to seven years’ hard labor.

In hearing the application for a writ of habeas corpus to-day, the Chief Justice said the writs ought to be rendered unnecessary, the Court having previously decided that the detention of the Chinese had been illegal. He stated if any men so detained, in attempting to break free, killed anyone, they could not be punished for murder, as they were illegally restrained contrary to the distinct order of the Court; but on the other hand, the person so restraining them would be guilty of murder.
