LICENSING COMMITTEE MEETINGS.

BLENHEIM EAST. The annual meeting of the Blenheim East Licensing Committee was held in the Courthouse at noon yesterday. Present: Messrs R. H. Smalo (Chairman), Robert Kilpatrick, M. Hoaly, E. C. Litchfield and Chas. Williams. EMPIRE HOTEL. James O’Sullivan applied for a renewal of his license for this hotel. In reply, to the Bench, Sergt Scanlan said tho house had been conducted properly, and the firo escapes were all right. « The renewal was granted. MASONIC HOTEL. Mrs Johanna Tait applied for a renewal of the license for the Masonic Hotel. Sorgt Scanlan said that when he visited the house there wero Only catchweights on the windows, and no sash weights, but on his explaining the matter to the manager, tho evil was remedied at once. The" House had been conducted very fairly indeed. The renewal was granted. MARLBOROUGH HOTEL. Messrs Maher and Byron applied for a renewal of their license. In granting this, as well as the other licenses, the Bench said they wore influenced, and would be from timo to time, by the report of the police, so that really the granting of the license lay with the police. The police report would always havo very great weight with tho Committee. WHOLESALE LICENSES. Renewals of wholesale licenses were granted to Messrs F. H. Pickering and Co, and Walter Litchfield. PERMISSION TO EXTINGUISH LAMP. Jas. O’Sullivan applied for leave to extinguish tho lamp in front of the Empire Hotel at closing hour, viz., 11 o’clock. Tho Borough lamp was directly opposite, and he did not think that two lamps were necessary. Sergeant Scanlan opposed tho application. The hotel was at the junction of four roads, and it needed all the lamps. In fact, they could not have too many lamps at that particular spot, Somo time ago a serious accident had happened up Waiter-street, chiefly owing to the dark nature of the place. Publicans in Blenheim were doing very well, and could easily afford a little extra gas. The Bench pointed out that the Borough lamps wero extinguished at 12 o’clock, and it was the custom in most places in the Colony to keep the lamps burning outside the hotels. The application would be refused. This was all tho business.
