The Late Justice Johnston.
Per Press Association. Christchurch, Juno 4. Plugs were hoisted half-mast to-day, from respect to the late Justice Johnston. The offices of the Supreme and Magistrate’s Courts and of the legal firms were closed during the afternoon. Members of the bar assembled in the morning at the 11. M. Court, where Mr Beetliam, the presiding magistrate, expressed deep regret at the loss of such an upright man and just judge as Justice Johnston. Mr Williams, senior member of the Bar, was present, and expressed tho regret of the legal profession at His Honor’s sudden death. The Court was then adjourned, as a mark of respect to liis memory. Wellington, Juno 4. At the Supreme Court this morning, reference was made to the death of Judgo Johnstun. There was a full bench and bar, a number of visiting barristers being present. The Chief Justico, addressing the Attorney-General, said they all knew how well tho late Judge performed his duties. He was possessed of great naturel ability, and his loss would be deeply regretted by the bench, the bar, and tho public. Mr Whitaker, on behalf of tho Now Zealand bar, said that thirty years ago it had been his privilege as Attorney-General to welcome tho lato Judge to tho shores of New Zealand, and subsequently to congratulate him ou his appointment as Judge. During thirty years he had administered justice in tho i broadest sense; and not only as judge, but also as a citizen and a neighbor ho was highly esteemed by all, and was a notable example to the legal profession. It was the first occasion in New Zealand a Judge had died a Judge, as all previous holders of office had resigned before death. In conclusion, he regretted the death of so distinguished a Judge, and trusted he would receive tho reward of the just. Tho Court, out of respect, adjourned till tomorrow.
