The Rabbit Conference have examined Professor Watson on the disease of the nature of “itch” introduced by him from Germany. The Professor admitted that the disease, to be successful in the extermination of rabbits, depended on a moist atmosphere, and would consequently be of no value in the dry parts of Australia. He stated that the disease was not transmittable to other animals. Other witnesses expressed an opinion that the disease was not effective for purposes of rabbit extermination. Medical witnesses said that sheep would die from the disease. The Commission ascertained that the grazing capabilities of several runs had been reduced from 150,000 to 20,000 sheep in consequence of the inroads of rabbits. Owing to this fact runholders have given up runs every year. The Commissioners have gone to Gintinallogy Run, near Silvorton, where experiments will be conducted.
